David Solomon

“My love of wood began at a very young age where, as a toddler, I would sit in a corner and construct my ‘masterpieces’ with small blocks of wood, a hammer, and some nails. That love of wood has evolved into a passion for revealing the beauty within ordinary, North American woods and combining these with exotic woods to create functional and decorative pieces.

Wood pieces that some see as not fit for firewood, I see as my palette; gnarly crotch sections of limbs, decaying wood, and tree stumps often provide the raw material for the focal point in many of my creations. Cutting open such pieces is like a surprise package; never knowing what one will find, but often being rewarded with Nature’s beauty. This beauty is then “framed” with exotic hardwoods, chosen for complimentary colours and patterns.

I will always have a passion for wood. I love the way it looks, feels, and smells. I hope that my passion has translated into creations that surprise and delight the senses of the viewers. I also hope that it facilitates in them a deeper appreciation for the natural beauty of wood, especially the hidden treasures which are often undiscovered.”

David Solomon lives in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
