Canada’s pioneer studio potters, Erica and Kjeld Deichann were my first introduction to clay during the early 1960’s. Patient and generous Erica would allow me to sit and shape small pots which were later proudly displayed unfired on our kitchen window sill. Now years later, I realize that contact as a pivotal moment to be treasured.

I have been working with clay for 30+ years primarily with porcelain functional forms. Recently, fulfilling a long time goal of switching from electric firing to high fired reduction work in a gas kiln.  In the studio, I strive to balance my time between creating new work and teaching ceramics. I have always believed in the mentoring process and giving back to the community.

What is important to me in my work is the feeling a piece of pottery expresses, through its form, the color and energy. While working with contrasting elements, controlled vs. altered in many of the forms I strive to create pieces which have a sense of vitality and elegance.

Working with porcelain, I find the intrinsic beauty of this dense white clay suits my functional forms. Whether the final result is the earthy tones of multiple sprayed glazes or the translucency of a classic celadon glaze. The gas firing process and reduction glazes enhance the surface qualities of the porcelain.
